Kodiyakarai Forest, Point Calimere, wildlife sanctuary

Kodiyakarai forest
Kodiyakarai is known for its forests. In kodiyakarai, "Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary" is located and it is around 21 square kilo meters. The sanctuary was created in 1967 to protect the endangered species. This place is featured in the famous tamil novel "Ponniyin selvan". It has the temple that has been worshiped by Nayanmars.

Ramar patham:





  It has the foot prints of lord rama when he tried to look out the srilanka from this very height place.




     We can go into the forest just for a walk. There was a dedicated path for this purpose near the "Ramar Patham". There will be nothing to be feared other than annoying monkeys. But you can avoid them by not taking any carry bags or food with you.





A nice time for this walk would be earlier morning or just after a short rain!










 Fresh air and many medicinal plants grows here. Nobody allowed to collect them.


Old rail road way


We can clearly see that wherever Seemai karuvelam(Prosopis juliflora)  grows, there is no other trees. Just Void! God save 'em!

Chola light house:

   This was built by one of the tamil rulers of Cholas and now its been damaged. When 2004 tsunami attacked this place, it was damaged very badly.

    We can arrange boating with the help of local fishermen. Normally they would come for 500rs around. Nothing special in bay of bengal, I hope. Evening would be good for boating.

      You can go to the ramar patham and other places with your bike. But you are not allowed to enter the wild life sanctuary with ur bike; four wheelers are allowed and you can hire some auto also from near places.

      You can find Lodges at Vedaranyam which is 10kms far from Kodiyakarai. From Vedaranyam, you can travel by bus or hire a car.
